Overview

Located 45 km away from Shimla, away from the traffic of this well-known hill station, Chail is a stunning and mesmerizing hill station covered with forests on all sides. Developed as a summer retreat by the Maharaja of Patiala, it is known for its stunning palace, a cricket ground which is often regarded as the highest in the world. Additionally, Chail is also famous for the deodar forests that encompass every corner of the Chail Wildlife Sanctuary.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the distance between Chail and Delhi?

A car ride from Delhi to Chail or back takes around 8 hours with a few stops in between. Driving from Delhi to Chail, or coming back, usually takes about eight hours, including a few breaks along the way.

What makes the Chail cricket ground special?

The Chail cricket ground is a wonder in itself, as it sits 2,400 meters above sea level on a ridge-top clearing among stunning deodar trees. This feature is the reason why it is often regarded as the highest cricket ground in the world. The ground was developed and built by the Maharaja of Patiala and is now an integral part of the Chail Military School, which determines the visiting hours.

Is Chail good for families and couples?

Definitely. Chail is much quieter than Shimla or Kasauli, and getting around is easy, as most places are a short drive away, and the walks aren’t tough. Couples love the peaceful vibe and views of the forest. Families like to hang out in the open spaces at Sadhupul and around the old palace, where there’s room for kids to run around.

What is the best time to plan a trip to Chail?

Chail remains pleasant and green from March to June, whereas the months of October and November bring cooler days and clear skies. The months between December and January are cold and can even bring the occasional snow, which is the main reason why some travellers plan a visit during these months. During the July-September monsoon, the forests are lush, but rain can slow the hill roads.

Which meals are included?

Daily breakfast at your Chail hotel is included. Lunch and dinner are not, so you can eat at the hotel restaurant or at the small eateries by the river at Sadhupul and in the town. Meals and snacks on the drives to and from Delhi are also at your own cost.

Can we extend the trip to Shimla or Kasauli?

Yes. Chail combines easily with Shimla, Kufri or Kasauli, which are all within a few hours' drive. Tell us how many extra nights you would like and where, and we will send a revised itinerary and quotation for your dates.
